SD-Card: Perfect for Your Security Camera

There are a series of elements that must be taken into account when choosing an SD card for your surveillance camera. Since this type of device has a very articulate operation, not just any model will do.

To begin with, it is normal for any security camera to make loop recordings. If the SD card CCTV camera is not prepared for this job, it will end up suffering memory losses until it stops working correctly.

On the other hand, other factors must be taken into account. For example, many security cameras are installed outside. These types of cameras are prepared to withstand extreme conditions, be it rain, hail, or very high or very low temperatures. And the SD Card security camera should also have this feature.

Types of SD cards

Most entry-level and mid-range SLR cameras use SD (Secure Digital) type cards. Professional SLRs usually use the CF (Compact Flash) format. From the outside, they are easily distinguished because the SD is smaller, rectangular, and has one of the corners cut at an angle, while the CF is larger and practically square.

The SD cards have been evolving in terms of capacity and recording speed. From a capacity point of view, these are the different types of SD-Cards:

• SD: It is the original, oldest format, with a capacity of up to 2GB. Hardly used anymore

SDHC: Capacity up to 32GB

• SDXC: Capacity above 32GB (up to 2TB)

How Do I Choose the Right SD Card for My Camera?

• Look at your camera’s specifications to see what type of card it uses: SDHC or SDXC. If your camera specifies SDHC-type cards, keep in mind that it will be limited to 32GB and cards with a higher capacity will surely not work correctly.
• Also check the speed class of your camera (UHS-I, UHS-I…). If you choose an SD card with a speed class higher than that of your camera, there is no problem, it will work correctly, but you will not take advantage of the maximum speed of the card.
• Look for well-known brands and buy from trusted stores.
• It is preferable to buy two medium-capacity cards (32GB) than one high-capacity card (64GB / 128GB), but it will depend on your specific needs.
• SD or microSD? If your camera uses SD format you can use a microSD with an adapter without any problem.
• Even if it’s your camera that limits the writing speed, a high-speed card also saves you a lot of time when downloading photos or videos to your computer. You can also assess this when choosing between two cards of the same class but with different reading speeds.
